Staffordshire Georgian Creamware Wash Jug, Wedgwood Attribution, C.1800-1810

An exceptionally rare Georgian creamware wash jug produced in Staffordshire and highly attributed to the Wedgwood pottery, circa 1800-1810. Elegant in both form and decoration, it represents the finest tradition of early nineteenth-century English creamware.

Like many quality Staffordshire wares of the period, the undecorated creamware body was sent to Liverpool, where specialist workshops applied the crisp black transfer decoration before carefully hand-painting the burgundy enamel bands. The warm cream-coloured body provided the perfect background for this style of printing, producing the appearance of an antique engraved illustration on naturally aged paper.

Following decoration, the finished wares were distributed throughout Britain and exported overseas, particularly to the growing American market. Humorous genre scenes of this type became highly fashionable during the Georgian period and remain among the most recognisable designs found on English creamware.

The pitcher retains its elegant ovoid body, plain strap handle and original historic surface. More than two centuries later, the natural glaze crazing remains entirely consistent with authentic early nineteenth-century English creamware and confirms the originality of the piece.

Condition:

Fine age-related crazing is present throughout the glaze, entirely consistent with its early nineteenth-century age. The underside displays several glaze stress lines confined exclusively to the glaze layer; these do not penetrate the earthenware body and remain invisible under ultraviolet examination. No restoration, body cracks or repairs.
