"Meiji Period Japanese Satsuma Sugar Bowl With Lid, Signed Shozan, Kyoto, C.1880"
An antique Japanese Satsuma sugar bowl with lid,
signed by Kyoto artist Shozan (祥山), and dating to circa 1880. The
piece is hand-painted with a panoramic scene of elegant women and children in a
garden with architectural features and stylised foliage. Enamelled in soft
colours and highlighted in gold, the composition wraps around the body and
continues onto the lid.
The base bears the artist’s signature in gold on a black ground. Shozan is
a well-documented Kyoto studio decorator of the late 19th century, known for
high-quality export wares with intricate painting and gilding. Comparable
examples are recorded in Bonhams auction archives.
The turned wooden base is included with the piece but is not included in
the listed dimensions.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. No chips,
cracks or restoration.
