Rare Kinkozan Satsuma Samurai Vase With Bamboo Crossbar Handles, Meiji Japan, C. 1875–1885

Artist: Kinkozan

A distinguished late-Meiji Satsuma vase from the celebrated Kinkozan (錦光山) workshop in Kyoto, dating to c. 1875–1885. Finely potted in earthenware with an ivory crackle glaze, this imposing vase features an exceptionally rare neck construction: twin bamboo-form crossbar handles supporting a tall, triple-banded collar — a technically ambitious form reserved for high-status commissions.

The body is richly decorated with armoured samurai warriors in battle, advancing beneath gilt cloud scrolls and swirling dust. The precision of the raised moriage enamel and the controlled use of gilding demonstrate the high artistic standards of Kyoto ateliers in the Meiji period. The reverse features intricate, textile-inspired geometric patterns in harmonious tones of gold, brown, black and red. The underside bears the brushed calligraphic mark 日本 / 錦光山造 (Nippon / Kinkozan zō).
A carved hardwood display stand is included.

A powerful statement piece of Meiji-period Japanese craftsmanship, combining sculptural rarity with dynamic martial subject matter.

Historical Background
The Kinkozan family led Kyoto’s Satsuma production in the 19th century, supplying works of the highest refinement to aristocratic patrons and the growing international market via World Expositions. While figural courtly scenes were produced in larger numbers, samurai narrative vases of this scale and quality were made in comparatively small quantities and are now highly sought after by collectors of Japanese art.
