A dramatic late Meiji Kinkozan Kyoto Satsuma bowl that captures a moonlit battle with rare intensity. Warriors in brocaded armour are built up in stipple and raised gold; faces are individualised; the commander bears the Shimazu clan crest. The exterior is deep cobalt with floating gilt mons, a luxurious counterpoint to the pale crackled interior. Kinkozan, a leading Kyoto house since the 17th century, set the standard for export Satsuma at world fairs around 1900, pairing ivory crackle bodies with master-level enamelling and kinrande gilding.
Marks: gilt KINKOZAN seal over iron-red; faint painter’s device.
Date: c.1890–1910.
Condition: excellent; gilt wear limited to the cobalt rim and exterior; the interior scene is intact and bright; no cracks or repairs.
Artistic and material value: collector-grade narrative Kyoto Satsuma with clan mon; large format and strong display presence.
Investment note: consistent demand for large Kinkozan bowls with figure subjects supports long-term value.
Dimensions: diameter 24.8 cm; height 11.5 cm; weight 1.785 kg.
