Pair Of Japanese Satsuma Hexagonal Vases With Dragon And Rakan

Artist: Satsuma

This pair of Japanese Satsuma vases is particularly appealing because it is a true pair, with both pieces matching in size, form, palette and decorative effect. That visual harmony gives them a stronger decorative presence and makes them much more desirable than two merely similar cabinet wares.

The quality of the painting is notably good. The figures are individually characterised, the composition is confidently managed across both bodies, and the long dragon is especially effective. Raised moriage adds texture, relief and visual richness, while the gilding remains impressive overall and gives the pair a warm and luxurious finish.

These vases belong to the circle of good-quality Satsuma workshops producing refined export wares in the late Meiji to early Taisho period. They are clearly above ordinary tourist-grade Satsuma in both execution and decorative ambition. The combination of figural painting, dragon imagery, rich gilding and moriage gives them strong decorative appeal for both collectors and interiors.

The base mark indicates Dai Nippon, the Shimazu emblem and Satsuma ware.
