Antique Japanese Porcelain Large Sake Bottle Tokkuri Blue & White Edo

A fine and large antique Japanese porcelain sake bottle (tokkuri), dating from the Edo period.

This elegant porcelain bottle is painted in underglaze blue with freely brushed chrysanthemum-style floral sprays — a characteristic decorative style of the regional kilns of northern Japan, particularly those associated with the Kirigome workshops of Miyagi Prefecture.

The form is the classic tall-necked, globular-bodied tokkuri used for serving sake, here produced in porcelain and covered in a soft grey-white glaze with natural speckling and kiln marks typical of provincial Edo-period production.
The reverse features two dragonflies in flight.

The bottle stands an impressive 28 cm tall, larger than standard examples and very decorative.

Condition: Good condition.
