Meiji Japanese Porcelain Ginger Jar, Scenes From Hiroshige & Utamaro Woodblock Prints

An exceptional Japanese porcelain ginger jar, dating from the late Edo to early Meiji period (c. 1850–1880), beautifully hand-painted in overglaze enamels. This rare example features both its original domed outer lid and the inner sealing lid, a detail seldom found intact on 19th-century Japanese jars of this type.

The jar is decorated with continuous figural panels inspired by the classical poetic theme of the Mu Tamagawa (Six Jewel Rivers)—a subject celebrated in ukiyo-e woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, Utamaro, and others. Each scene captures elegant courtly figures set in riverside landscapes, with poetic calligraphy identifying each river.

The lid bears a floral motif with a poetic cartouche reading:

女歌人と弟子 – “A Female Poet and Her Disciple”
文亭画 – “Painted by Buntei”, with seal
