Porcelain Jar With Cobalt Blue Decoration. Arita Kilns Japan 17th Century Circa 1650.
Artist: Arita
Lathe-mounted hard porcelain jar decorated with 2 figures surrounded by plants, trees, rocks and flowers painted with cobalt oxide underglaze. The decoration is strongly inspired by Chinese creations of the late Ming period, a period of transition. Interestingly, one of the two figures, wearing a hat, appears to be initiating a disciple. Japanese work, mid-17th century, circa 1650. Good overall condition for a porcelain almost 4 centuries old, with wear and 3 accidents: a chip on the inside of the heel, a crack underneath and a piercing on the side; the three accidents are visible on the photos. No restoration or grinding. As the upper rim is not glazed, it is likely that there was a lid. Height: 215mm.
