Japanese Porcelain Tokkuri. European Frame. Arita 17th Century.
Artist: Arita
Turned in hard porcelain and decorated in cobalt blue oxide, this tokkuri was created in the Arita kilns around 1670-80 for the European market. It is a rare model with a silver frame. The Kyushu Porcelain Museum houses a tokkuri of identical form, illustrated under no. 1541 in the Shibata collection catalog. The mounting does not conceal accidents, as is often the case, and a photo shows the lip of the upper rim intact. There are 3 hallmarks that should enable the mount to be dated. Numerous cracks typical of Arita kilns of this period. No repairs. Used.
