Chinese Elm Scholar's Table (jumu). China, Ming Period, 17th Century.
Artist: Ming
The square table is made from beautifully grained Chinese elm (Jumu). It's a rare table model with an amusing feature: wooden braces connect the table legs to the top. These 4 highly effective reinforcements are unobtrusive and provide greater ease of use for the user. The 4 sabots (leg bases), weakened by successive washings, were replaced long ago, while everything else is original, and the reinforcements are as solid as on the first day. The top has lived through its life, stained, scratched, scarred and burned, like an old man's, its wrinkles and scars are venerable. This table is of refined elegance. 925x925x733mm. Chinese cabinetmaking from the late Ming period, 17th century or earlier.
