Porcelain Vase. Cobalt Blue Decoration. Japan 17th Century.
Artist: Arita
Large vase in turned hard porcelain. Elegant double gourd shape with flared neck. Plant decoration painted in cobalt blue underglaze. The style is inspired by Chinese porcelain of the transitional period, notably the banana tree and the spearheads on the neck. On one side is drawn what appears to be a palm tree bearing dates, a representation we have not seen elsewhere. Height: 41cm. Base broken by a large crack. Japan, Arita kiln 17th century.3 vases of similar form from the Shibata collection (n°: 1389-90-91) dated 1660-80 are housed at the Kyushu Ceramic Museum.
