Pair Of Arita Porcelain Plates. Medallion Design. Japan, 17th Century.
Artist: Kutani
The medallion decoration on these plates is rare because it is executed using glazes from the Kutani color palette, which is unusual. On the reverse is an auspicious mark, likely signifying “Longevity” or “Happiness,” which is also quite different from the traditional “Fuku” mark typically found on Arita porcelain from this period. Good condition, with a firing defect (a crack in the green glaze on one of the two plates). Late 17th-century Japan, from the Arita or Kutani kilns. Diameter: 195 mm.
