Hododa Satsuma Bowl “thousand Butterflies”, Yokohama, Late Meiji, C. 1895–1910

Exquisite Japanese Satsuma bowl by Hododa (保土田), Yokohama, late Meiji period. The entire vessel is paved with the “Thousand Butterflies” motif — miniature butterflies in soft enamels and opulent raised gilt — while the interior features banners and maple leaves drifting over an ivory crackled ground.
