Ludwigsburg Court Porcelain Serving Tray With Crowned Initial, C.1765–1785

A rare rectangular hard-paste porcelain serving tray from the Ducal Manufactory at Ludwigsburg, Württemberg, commissioned by Duke Carl Eugen himself.

The white ground is centred by a crowned white initial "I" in an iron-red oval cartouche. The open five-pointed ducal coronet is framed by purple roses, laurel and leafy sprays. A purple-brown Empire-style scroll and palmette border, with gilded edges, creates a particularly strong decorative presence.

The underside carries the underglaze cobalt-blue Ludwigsburg mark of interlaced C's beneath the ducal crown, together with a blue numeral "2", probably indicating the tray's mould size. We are inclined to believe that this was a special presentation commission, intended as a prestigious diplomatic gift.

Condition:
Excellent antique condition. A small chip to the rim on one side. Minimal, barely visible gilt wear to one small area of the rim.
