Kpm Berlin Topographical Porcelain Cabinet Cup, Peacock Island, C.1840

A rare antique German hard-paste porcelain topographical cabinet cup (Ansichtentasse) produced by the Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin (Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur), circa 1840. Made during the reign of King Friedrich Wilhelm IV as part of KPM's celebrated presentation series, it features a campana-shaped body with an asymmetrical scalloped rim, a high-loop gilded handle with thumb-rest and lower volute scroll, and an interior fully lined with burnished 24k gold.

The front reserve is decorated with a finely hand-painted polychrome enamel view of "Schloss Pfaueninsel" (Peacock Island Castle) near Potsdam, built between 1794 and 1797 for Countess Lichtenau by order of King Friedrich Wilhelm II. Based on historical graphics by court painter Wilhelm Barth, the scene bears the painted title in black gothic script: "Die Pfaueninsel bei Potsdam". The exterior is decorated with tooled matte-and-burnished gold palmettes and acanthus scrollwork.

KPM's topographical Ansichtentassen rank among the factory's most desirable cabinet porcelains, combining finely painted architectural views with elaborate burnished gilding. Intended primarily for cabinet display or presentation rather than everyday use.

The underside bears the genuine hand-painted underglaze cobalt blue KPM Sceptre mark with "KPM" beneath. An incised potter's tally mark is visible in the paste above the sceptre.

Condition:

Professional restoration to one section of the handle. Minor losses to the gilding, principally on the handle. Otherwise in excellent antique condition.
