Rare Derby Porcelain Figure Of Andromache, Model No.100, C.1778

Artist: Der

An exceptionally rare Derby porcelain figure of Andromache Weeping over the Ashes of Hector, model No. 100, dating to the late 1770s. Large in scale and richly enamelled, it is one of Derby's most impressive classical figures and a striking collector's display piece.

Andromache is shown mourning beside the funerary urn containing Hector's ashes. Her veiled pose, expressive gesture and surviving floral wreath give the composition considerable emotional power, while the military trophies on the pedestal reinforce the heroic and tragic nature of the subject.

Recorded by Peter Bradshaw in Derby Porcelain Figures 1750–1848 as model No. 100, the figure is associated with Pierre Stephan and was produced in two sizes, this example corresponding to the larger version. The underside retains characteristic patch marks associated with early Derby porcelain together with the incised model number No. 100. Examples of this model are held in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum.

The exceptional survival of the floral wreath and the remarkable preservation of the original colours and gilding make this a particularly desirable example.

Measurements

  • Height: 25.5 cm / 10.04″
  • Width: 11.8 cm / 4.65″
  • Depth: 8.2 cm / 3.23″
  • Weight: 1128 g

Condition

Excellent antique condition overall. The base has old cracks which were stabilised in the distant past. These are confined to the base and do not affect the figure itself. There are also a few small, unobtrusive firing lines to the cloak. The colours, gilding and enamels are exceptionally well preserved, the floral wreath remains undamaged, and UV examination shows no restoration to the figure itself.
