"Jacob Petit, French Figural Perfume Bottle, Columbina, C.1830 "
An extremely rare and collectible French figural
perfume bottle by Jacob Petit, one of the most individual voices in French
ceramics of the 1830s. The finely glazed and gilded ceramic figure represents
Columbina - a classic theatrical character from the Commedia dell’arte
tradition. Made of earthenware or stoneware, the figure is hollow-moulded with
an opening at the top intended for a stopper (now missing).
This scent bottle
exemplifies the vivid, expressive modelling and theatrical flair associated
with Petit’s early work. The quality of glaze and decoration is comparable to
museum-held examples in Grasse (Musée International de la Parfumerie).
The base is unmarked, but a rubbed or deliberately erased stamp is still
faintly visible — a known 19th-century practice to enhance rarity or mask
origin, particularly in pieces sold abroad.
A rare surviving piece of French ceramic history with strong collector
appeal due to its attribution, form, and excellent condition.
Condition and Dimensions:
Minor wear to gilding on the base. A small brownish
mark on the hat, likely original paint from
missing stopper or decorative finial. This detail does not affect the
integrity of the piece. Otherwise very good antique
condition.
Height: 23.8 cm; Width: 11 cm; Depth: 8.3 cm;
Weight: 712 g.
