Domenico Poloniato (1926-2013) Large white earthenware statue signed on the base D. POLONIATO.
It depicts an androgynous dandy dressed in a frock coat, bicorn hat, and stockings.
The Venetian dandy is leaning against a chair, all on a rocaille-style base adorned with roses.
This sculpture was used to support a parasol placed behind the figure in what resembles a tree trunk.
Circa 1960, in very good condition.
Rare due to its size.
Domenico Poloniato was a very important figure in the Italian ceramics community.
He is presented and recognized as a maestro in his work.
A member of a family of eight generations of ceramists, he spent 70 years shaping clay.
He studied at the Institute of Ceramic Art in Nove, province of Vicenza in the Veneto region, and became a master there. Following in the footsteps of an emeritus professor, his work is varied, drawing inspiration from Venice, the 18th century, and the early 19th century.
He inspired numerous ceramic centers such as Zanolli, Sebellin, Zarpellon, and Barettoni.
A highly regarded sculptor in the USA.
