Kashan Carpet, Kadjar, 90 X 163 Cm, Wool & Silk Hand-knotted In Iran, 1880 - 1900, Collection

Artist: Art Kadjar
Hand-knotted Kashan rug from the late 19th century, circa 1880 - 1900.
This beautiful antique piece measures 90 cm wide by 163 cm long.
Its density is 600,000 knots per m2.
Rug knotted under the Kadjar dynasty.

The central motif has two large halberd-shaped pendants.
Motif surrounded by other numerous flowers and interlacing covering the field.
This polylobed red medallion features a skilful decoration of flowers.
It surrounds a large, stylized, cruciform flower in full bloom, in the manner of an open chalice.
This same type of flower and color is found in the corners of the border.

The border composed of varied motifs, and mainly hexagonal cartouches, in succession.
These hexagons are separated at the four corners by flowering vases, bringing in the idea of the tree of life.
The overall condition of this piece is good, the velvet clean, some wear on the selvedges, which gives it a very special charm.

The overall condition is good, there is no pile reduction, the very fine wool and silk used are top quality.
The thickness is five millimeters.

The colors are fresh with no loss of hue and not insolated.
The highly worked field may incline us as well as the colors to conceive aTabriz in this magnificent antique rug, but we are indeed in the presence of a Kashan.

Iranian merchants call this type of Kashan "Motachem", after a famous weaver.
Kashan (Kachan, Keshan): large city in central Iran.
At the time of the Persian Renaissance, Kashan was the center of carpet production of legendary splendor.
Fine-woven carpets of great compositional richness were knotted by the royal manufactory of Shah Abbas.
They have become the centerpieces of museums and private collections.
Craftsmanship came to a halt in Kashan between the Afghan invasion (1722) and the end of the 19th century.
Recarpet production began with carpets distinguished by the superior quality of the wool giving an extremely velvety appearance.
These examples are called Kashan Motashemi, after the most famous master weaver of the late 19th century.
The decorations are varied and offer meticulous craftsmanship: hunting scenes, subjects with figures inspired by Persian mythology, birds in a vegetal setting, trees of life.

Thanks to the superior quality of the wool, their tight knotting, and the beauty of their natural colors and designs, Kashans took their place among the finest Persian rugs
This rug has been professionally and ecologically cleaned.
