This Persian Gashgai rug, originating from Iran, measures 102 cm wide by 150 cm long. Hand-knotted wool, circa 1970. The interest of this piece lies in the unique shape of the niche (mihrab). Indeed, the niche is highly original, treated as a large arrow covered with stylized and colorful flowers, notably tulips. Its overall design has an undeniable Turkish influence, visible in the design and the elements that compose this rug. The high-quality wool used and the dense, tightly knotted weave also evoke this influence. Our rug, in shades of yellow, curry, saffron, violet, and olive green, is covered with flowers and incorporates green, straw yellow, and orange. This rug is in very good condition. The beautifully complex design reveals numerous motifs. Tribal motifs and other stylized plant designs are always found on these rugs. These rugs are knotted in the Shiraz region, located near ancient Persepolis, which gave its name to Persia, now Iran. Shiraz is located in the Fars province, where the Ghashghai tribes reside and produce rugs under both names, Shiraz or Ghashghai. Dimensions: Width: 102 cm (40") x Length: 150 cm (59").
