A beautiful Kadjar piece—just the kind I love to unearth—
this stunning Tabriz rug, featuring a mihrab motif in a beautiful orange-red hue, dates from the 19th century.
The soft, fine wool from which it is made still retains its magnificent colors.
This rug measures 138 cm wide by 178 cm long.
At the time, it was intended more for decoration than for prayer.
This piece features a vibrant design of a vase from which springs a tree of life covered in flowers, with numerous birds perched on a canopy of branches supporting the mihrab.
Other flowers adorn the spandrels of the mihrab against a blue background.
This rug is certainly a bit worn, but the colors remain clear, beautiful, and vivid.
The weave is very sturdy; this beautiful artifact can be preserved as is or undergo a light restoration along the selvedges.
Two large blue peacocks—a motif often found in Persian culture—are positioned at the base of the rug on either side of the vase.
## It is worth noting that Western iconography sometimes depicts peacocks drinking from the Eucharistic chalice.
In the Middle East, they are depicted on either side of the Tree of Life:
symbols of the incorruptible soul and thepsychic duality of humankind.
A cosmic symbol in Islam: when it spreads its tail, it represents either the universe, the full moon, or the sun at its zenith.
## A Sufi legend, likely of Persian origin, states that “God created the Spirit in the form of a peacock and showed it its own image in the mirror of the Divine Essence.”
The peacock was seized with a reverent awe and let fall drops of sweat from which all other beings were created.
The spreading of the peacock’s tail symbolizes the cosmic unfolding of the Spirit.”
The wide border with a midnight blue floral background is flanked by two bands of carnation flowers.
