Milk Or Cream Pot, Copper,,, Azerbaijan, 19th Century.
Artist: Art De L'azerbaïdjan
Sernij, milk or cream pot, red and yellow copper, Azerbaijan, 19th century.
Called "Sernig", these pots with handles, closed by a lid, were designed to receive milk, when milking cows, goats or sheep,
They were used to prepare "gatig", a product close to cream and to preserve it.
They are found in various sizes, in the shape of a large egg, with a lid placed on top.
In red copper or brass, always extensively chiselled with Greek and interlacing.
These everyday objects for the women of these tribes, are always abundantly engraved.
Our model, features two wide friezes delicately chiselled with interlacing at the bottom and top of the belly.
Two thin strips of latticework run along the interlacing friezes.
Two sturdy rounded handles flank the body on either side.
A handle on the decorated lid, provides a firm grip.
An almost similar model is present at the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in Azerbaijan.
Metal craftsmanship in these lands has been present since 5000 B.C.
This type of pot is found in the Maghreb and throughout Central Asia.
These pots can be more archaic in design or highly decorated (our model).
Dimensions:
height 32 cm (11") -----diameter : 24 cm (9")----- weight : 2412 grs
