Pair of Ghalam Zani wedding vases circa 1900-1920.
They are made of silvered metal chased "in repoussé" and originate from Isfahan, Iran.
From the early 20th century, towards the end of the Qajar dynasty.
The pair is in perfect condition.
# The Qajar dynasty (Qājār, Qadjar, Qajar, Persian: قاجار)
Turkmen dynasty that ruled Iran from 1786 to 1925.
Each vase is decorated on the body with three large scalloped and chased rosettes.
Numerous Monabbat-kari peonies, birds, cranes, parrots, birds of paradise... frolic in... Interlacing branches and flowers play among the foliage.
Friezes and intricate mandorlas cover the entire body.
These delicately chiseled objects are worked with a gouge and burin.
They were often given as wedding gifts in Iran.
The neck is adorned with a scalloped hem of pearls. Under each vase, two hallmarks in Persian calligraphy and numerals are applied.
This type of vase, so finely executed in repoussé, is rarely found in pairs.
## Engraving, called Ghalam Zani, is the art of carving designs on metal, particularly copper, gold, silver, and brass. Isfahan is the main center of Ghalam Zani.
This ancient technique still exists today;
the pieces leave the workshops in highly polished tinned copper to give them the brilliance of silver.
