Antique Ethnic Kilim, 178 X 258 Cm, Wool, First Part Of The 20th Century, Very Good Condition

This large kilim measures 178 cm wide by 258 cm long.
It is in fine condition from the first part of the 20th century 1930/1940.
This kilim presents us with a large decoration of three medallions, encircled by a wide border.

# Numerous fertility and happiness motifs can be found, including:
"Hands on hips", representing a pregnant woman resting her hands on her hips.
This motif has been present since the earliest human artistic representations, representing maternity, birth and fertility.
It is found in many ways in simpler or more complex figures in cave art.
"Ram's horns" symbolize masculinity, male fertility, strength, heroism and righteousness.
This motif is also found extensively on Turkmen carpets, notably the Yomoud, but also on Afghans.
Traditionally, weaving is carried out by women.
The use of this motif is intended to confer strength in all aspects of life on husbands.
"Stars"
"Stars" are the symbol of happiness on Anatolian kilims, found throughout the border on a black background.
Due to technical weaving constraints, these stars are most often represented with six or eight branches.
On our model we find the eight-pointed Star of Medes, as was the legendary diamond in King Solomon's ring.
The kilim is strewn with stylized flowers all over its red field, this color associated with flowers is a symbol of lasting happiness.

# In short, these numerous stylized motifs lead us to believe that we are in the presence of a wedding carpet.
The big difference between vintage kilims and antique kilims is the type of dyes used to dye the wools.
As soon as chemical dyes became available, women in Anatolia and Iran were seduced by the wide range of colors offered by this new technique, and gradually abandoned the use of vegetable dyes.
In some regions, this movement began as early as the end of the 19th century.
The colors of these kilims, originally bright, have faded over the years.
The blues became blue-gray, the reds: pale terracotta, the emerald greens: lime or almond.
Today, this gives them a powdery, soft look that allows them to be integrated into most of our contemporary interiors.

Not having been woven for commercial purposes, kilims remain a wonderful expression of local traditions.
This preserves their authentic character and gives them a quaint charm.
