Kazak Rug, Caucasus, 142 Cm X 178 Cm, Wool On Wool Hand Knotted Before 1950, Very Good Condition
Artist: Kazaks
Kazak carpet in wool on wool, before 1950 in very good condition decorated with three moss green staircase medallions, surrounded by hooks which are like the swastika, symbol of happiness, placed on a brick-colored field.
In the center of each medallion, a star of Medes or Star of Solomon border decorated with a symbol of eternity bordered on the inside by a pattern in the form of arrows called "medahil".
We find this geometric composition in rhombus with hooks in the region of Gandja located SW of Kazak (100 kms), Gandja is at the crossroads of Russia, Turkey and Iran.
This decoration is also found with a great deal of resemblance in the ancient work of the tribes of Belouchistan, which is to say the difficulty of identifying certain Caucasian rugs which are referred to by the generic term of Kazak.
The medallion with a central staircase cross is in the Armenian tradition, imported by emigrants to the new regions where they settled.
Our model of Armenian Christian craftsmanship is mounted in wool on wool, which encourages us to orient its close birth in the green and mountainous areas of the Caucasus, a wool-on-wool knot is located more inland and deep in the Caucasian lands than a knot on cotton.
The colors used, they also bring us closer to this region, brick, green, blue and terracotta are shades that we find in the tradition of the Kazaks. Dimensions: Width 142 cm (4'7 ") x length: 178 cm (5'9")
