Royal Worcester Richard Sebright Painted Fruit Cabinet Plate, 1918

Artist: Royal Worcester

Signed by the celebrated Royal Worcester artist Richard Sebright, this elegant cabinet plate was produced in England in 1918 and retains the original Bonhams auction labels, providing documented auction provenance.

The finely executed still life portrays a ripe pear, a naturally split golden plum and several gooseberries amongst gooseberry leaves and delicate blue forget-me-not flowers. The restrained composition, soft atmospheric background and remarkably natural colouring exemplify the painterly refinement that made Sebright the foremost exponent of Royal Worcester's Painted Fruit tradition.

Richard Sebright is officially recognised as the greatest fruit painter in the history of the Royal Worcester Porcelain Company. His finest signed works are regarded as museum-quality examples of Royal Worcester porcelain and have achieved record prices at major international auctions, placing them among the most desirable Painted Fruit wares ever produced by the factory.

The shaped border is finished in a deep claret ground and enriched with lavish burnished gold ornament, elegant scrolling decoration and finely executed raised paste gilding (jewelled gold) created from individually applied gold beads. The reverse bears the official Royal Worcester factory backstamp for 1918, together with the hand-painted pattern number "W 8346" and additional factory painter's and production marks.

Dimensions:

  • Diameter 22.6 cm. Height 2.5 cm. Weight 412 g

Condition:

A fine crack passes through the central painted reserve but does not extend into the richly decorated border. Apart from this, the plate remains in excellent antique condition. The gilt decoration, raised jewelled gilding, hand-painted enamels and claret ground are exceptionally well preserved, with virtually no wear.
