A sculptural Danish Neoclassical bisque vase by P. Ipsens Enke, Copenhagen, distributed in Britain by A. Borgen & Co., London. The design is inspired by Bertel Thorvaldsen’s “Angel of the Night” — a poetic allegory of rest, wisdom, and maternal protection.

The pale biscuit surface carries finely modelled winged figures: one side showing the angel with a sleeping child; the reverse depicting a goddess with two children and an owl. The flared rim and harmonious silhouette typify the balanced proportions of late-19th-century Nordic design.

P. Ipsens Enke was a leader in Scandinavian neoclassical ceramics, noted for their collaboration with artists who revived Thorvaldsen’s imagery in the decorative arts.
