Rare Carl Tielsch & Co. Rococo Revival Porcelain Coffee Pot, circa 1850s

This rare Carl Tielsch & Co. porcelain coffee pot, dating to the 1850s, is a fine example of mid-19th-century Rococo Revival design, created for the rising European bourgeoisie. Crafted from hard-paste porcelain, the pot is finished with a pure white glaze, richly accented with hand-applied gilding. The elaborate Rococo-inspired decoration features deeply moulded floral and foliate motifs around the spout, handle, lid, and foot, each detail enhanced with gold.

The body adopts an elegant eight-lobed baluster form, a fashionable silhouette of the period, offering multiple surfaces for intricate decorative treatment. The Rococo Revival style, popular throughout Europe during the second quarter of the 19th century, drew inspiration from 18th-century French designs, particularly the works of Sèvres and Meissen. Pieces such as this were intended not only for functional use but also as displays of refinement and social status.

The restrained use of white and gold reflects contemporary taste for rich yet balanced colour schemes in interior decoration. The underside is marked with the early Carl Tielsch eagle and C.T. monogram, confirming its production at the Altwasser manufactory during its early years, when the firm was rapidly establishing itself as a major competitor to larger German and French porcelain houses.

Today, early Rococo Revival pieces by Carl Tielsch are increasingly sought after by collectors of 19th-century European porcelain, particularly those with an interest in German decorative arts and luxury tablewares.

Historical Background
Founded in 1845 in Altwasser, Silesia, Carl Tielsch & Co. quickly rose to prominence as a major producer of fine hard-paste porcelain for both domestic and international markets. Drawing inspiration from leading European manufactories such as Meissen and Berlin’s KPM, Tielsch’s workshop specialised in highly detailed, hand-decorated wares, often combining German technical precision with French stylistic influences. Early marks, such as the blue eagle over "C.T.," are associated with some of the firm's most refined production.
