Late 18th Century Chelsea Porcelain Miniature Group, Cat With Kitten
This rare porcelain miniature group, attributed to Chelsea and dating to the late 18th century, depicts a seated spotted cat with her kitten in a quiet, intimate composition. Such small-scale works were intended for close viewing and refined domestic settings rather than for formal display.
Chelsea porcelain is known for its lively modelling and sensitivity to natural subjects. Animal figures were especially popular, and cats, associated with domestic comfort and alertness, were among the most appealing motifs. The modelling is soft and assured, with freely applied black spotting that gives the figures individuality and life.
The oval base is finished as a cobalt-blue cushion with a gilt band to the edge. A gilt anchor mark, traditionally associated with Chelsea porcelain, is present and supports a late 18th-century dating. A fine and uncommon example of Chelsea animal porcelain in miniature form.
