Derby Porcelain Figure Pair Model 314, Reading Gentleman And Tatting Lady, C. 1785
A classic Derby domestic genre composition adapted from the 1771 model no. 184 and issued as model no. 314.
The scene portrays a gentleman reading and a young woman engaged in tatting with a lace shuttle. The female figure’s cobalt-blue skirt is richly gilded with floral ornament, complemented by a pink bodice and gilt necklace, while the male figure is finished in harmonising enamels.
Both figures are seated on rococo chairs with pierced scrolled bases and floral decoration with gilt highlights. Reissued repeatedly due to strong demand, this model remains one of Derby’s established late eighteenth-century figure subjects. Factory numbering is preserved to the bases.
