Pair Of Derby Porcelain Figurines "the Dresden Shepherds", Bloor Period, Circa 1825

An appealing pair of Derby porcelain figures known as “The Dresden Shepherds”, produced during the Bloor Derby period around 1825. The shepherd extends an apple while holding a basket of fruit, and the shepherdess replies with a flower, creating a refined pastoral exchange.

The subject originates in mid-18th-century Saxon pastoral sculpture and compositions associated with Johann Joachim Kändler. Documented in Peter Bradshaw, Derby Porcelain Figures 1750–1848, the model was first introduced at Derby around 1758 and remained in production, with variations, into the early 19th century.

The continued manufacture of this design demonstrates its lasting popularity and decorative appeal. This pair represents a later Derby continuation of a long-established pastoral model. The undersides retain faint Bloor Derby marks, kiln and shelf marks, old inventory residues, and the incised working number 55. A desirable Bloor Derby pastoral pair for collectors of English porcelain figures.

Female figure: height 19.5 cm; width 11 cm; depth 8 cm; weight 535 g.
Male figure: height 20 cm; width 11 cm; depth 8 cm; weight 447 g.

Condition:
Female figure: loss to the flower formerly held in the left hand; a small chip to the rim of the hat; a blue underglaze smear on the nose, likely the result of an old local retouching attempt.

Male figure: enamel losses to the hat and to the shoes.

Both figures are otherwise in normal antique condition, with honest age-related wear and no major restorations, retaining strong color, good definition and an excellent overall presence as a pair.
