Samson Paris Armorial Ewer In Helm Form, Late 19th Century

Artist: Samson

An impressive armorial porcelain ewer by Samson, Paris, produced in the late 19th century. The elaborate helm-shaped form features a high undulating rim, pronounced pouring lip and a sculptural scroll handle, raised on a pedestal base. The piece was conceived as a decorative object with strong visual impact.

The surface is decorated with polychrome floral ornament, stylised branches and fine arabesques over a white porcelain ground, enriched with extensive gilding. The decoration reflects Samson’s interpretation of 18th-century armorial and Compagnie des Indes porcelain adapted to late 19th-century Parisian taste.

The armorial crest bears the Latin motto “Sola Virtus Invicta”, associated with the Howard family, Dukes of Norfolk, depicted with a crowned shield and heraldic animal supporters in Samson’s decorative style.

Large armorial ewers of this type represent some of the most ambitious porcelain forms produced by Samson and are highly sought after by collectors.

Technically, the upper body and pedestal base are constructed as separate elements joined by an internal metal pin, a known Samson practice for large, ambitious forms.
