"Staffordshire Pearlware Loving Cup, Chinoiserie, Cobalt & Gilt, C.1820"
A finely decorated Staffordshire pearlware loving cup,
circa 1820, featuring chinoiserie transfer decoration in puce, highlighted with
enamel and gilt over a deep cobalt blue ground. The cylindrical form with twin
loop handles is characteristic of early 19th-century English drinking vessels,
particularly in commemorative or presentation contexts.
The glaze displays a faint bluish pooling and pronounced surface
crazing, typical of pearlware. The cobalt ground shows an incomplete finish
near the footrim, with visible drips and uneven application — a common feature
of hand-applied decoration in Staffordshire pearlware of the period. In this
example, the irregular application enhances its uniqueness — no identical
version is known to exist, making it a rare collector’s item.
While similar
pieces are often described online as "Gaudy Welsh", this attribution
is inaccurate. True Gaudy Welsh pottery features hand-painted floral designs in
vivid colour palettes, whereas this cup employs chinoiserie scenes applied via
transfer printing - firmly placing it within the Staffordshire pearlware
tradition.
