Paris Porcelain Statuette, “la Dormeuse,” After Michel Victor Acier, Circa 1850–1880

A rare French statuette made of Paris porcelain (Old Paris) in a Parian-style bisque, created around 1850–1880. It is based on the famous model *La Dormeuse* by the French sculptor Michel Victor Acier (1736–1799), originally created for the Meissen porcelain manufactory. Crafted from matte, unglazed porcelain imitating carved white marble, this elegant composition depicts a young woman asleep in an armchair, with a love letter tucked into her bodice, while one of her porcelain slippers rests on the molded base imitating cobblestone paving.

The armchair, the small side table, and the drapery attest to the high quality of modeling characteristic of the finest Parisian porcelain productions. In the 19th century, Parisian porcelain workshops produced numerous interpretations of famous 18th-century sculptural models created by leading European artists, notably compositions originally designed for the Meissen manufactory.

These pieces are now prized for the quality of their porcelain, their modeling, and their faithful interpretation of historical models. The flat reverse side retains three original firing slits, characteristic of 19th-century Parian porcelain production. The base is entirely unmarked, in accordance with the well-established practice of many Parisian porcelain workshops, which generally did not affix any maker’s mark to their statuettes.

Condition: The tips of the thumb and index finger on the right hand are missing. One of the two original slippers is missing. The upper finial on the right arm of the chair is missing. In good overall condition.
