Volkstedt, Richard Eckert & Co., Large Galant Musician Porcelain Pair, C. 1894
An elegant and substantial pair of late 19th-century German porcelain figures produced by Richard Eckert & Co., Volkstedt. These large-scale works reflect the refined Rococo Revival aesthetic fashionable in European decorative interiors of the period.
Executed in bisque porcelain with glazed bases, the figures display crisp sculptural detail and carefully balanced painting of faces and costume elements. The scale and weight emphasise their intention as statement decorative pieces.
This model type was already popular in Volkstedt workshops from the 1880s and continued in production under Richard Eckert & Co. after 1894. Some interpretations suggest a connection to 19th-century Faust and Gretchen imagery within the broader European pictorial tradition inspired by Goethe.
Both figures carry the underglaze blue mark of Richard Eckert & Co., Volkstedt, and the incised number “30”.
