Romanov Blue Wedding Service Plate, Imperial Russian Porcelain, C.1889
A striking Imperial Russian porcelain plate produced at the Dulevo Factory of the M.S. Kuznetsov Association, c.1889, for the celebrated Romanov Blue Wedding Service. The original service was created by the Imperial Porcelain Factory in St. Petersburg for the marriage of Grand Duke Sergei Alexandrovich and Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodorovna.
The design combines a deep cobalt-blue border, a scalloped gilt-edged rim and the crowned conjoined cipher "SE" executed in overglaze gilding. The reverse retains the gilt Kuznetsov Dulevo Factory mark beneath the Russian Imperial double-headed eagle together with an impressed size number 2.
Historically significant and visually impressive, the plate offers both strong decorative presence and direct association with the Romanov court. Replacement pieces such as this played an important role in maintaining the great ceremonial services used at official receptions and court events.
