"Daisy Makeig-jones Wedgwood Lustre Bowl, C.1915"
A rare and highly collectible Wedgwood Lustre bowl, with
slightly worn pattern Z4831, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones circa 1915. The
green lustre exterior, enriched with multicolored stainings producing a violet
sheen, is decorated with finely gilded oriental animal motifs. The interior in
soft green lustre is centered with a coiling dragon bearing a human face, flanked
by stylized blue clouds. Makeig-Jones
was instrumental in reviving Wedgwood’s profitability during the early 20th
century, but she approached her work as more than commercial design. She
crafted elaborate visual narratives, transforming porcelain into miniature
worlds filled with fantastical creatures, rich gemstone tones and intricate
ornament. At 5.3 cm in height and 10 cm in diameter, this bowl is a prime
example of her artistry, offering both visual splendor and lasting investment
appeal.
