Large Chinese Porcelain Punch Bowl With Coat Of Arms, Late 18th Century

A magnificent, large punch bowl made of Chinese export porcelain, featuring rich hand-painted decoration and gilding, dating from the late 18th century. Its impressive dimensions, expressive heraldic composition, and excellent condition make it a remarkable collector’s item and a spectacular piece of interior décor.

The rare combination of heraldic and maritime motifs is of particular interest. A complex quartered shield is supported by two vivid purple lions. Above it stands a fire-breathing dragon’s head emerging from a red mural crown. On the opposite side is a depiction of a European sailing ship. Delicate floral motifs and fine gilded ornamentation along the rim complete the composition. The painting was entirely hand-painted, requiring skill, patience, and a great deal of time.

Coat-of-arms porcelain served as a symbol of the status and wealth of the European aristocracy and prominent merchant families, due to the high cost of commissioning it and the lengthy sea transport required. Beneath the coat of arms is the Latin motto RESURGAM. In Fairbairn’s heraldic compendium, it is attributed to the Crosbie, Crosby, and Stewart families. The exact ownership of this coat of arms remains to be determined. The excellent condition of a bowl of this size deserves special attention, which gives it strong investment potential. The significance of this type of piece is confirmed by comparable examples, such as a heraldic bowl from the Qianlong period sold at Sotheby’s in London.

Condition: Excellent. The object has been examined under ultraviolet light; no signs of restoration were detected. There is a small kiln crack on the underside, which occurred during manufacture.
