"Wedgwood Lustre Pair Of Three-handled Loving Mugs By Daisy Makeig-jones, C.1915"
A matched pair of Wedgwood lustre three-handled Loving
Mugs, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones circa 1915. The first mug corresponds to
Decoration Book pattern Z4827: Ruby Lustre exterior with butterflies and
oriental motifs, and a Mother-of-Pearl Lustre interior with a butterfly at the
centre. The base is stamped Wedgwood with pattern number. The second mug
has a green lustre exterior with two panels — a coiled gilt snake on one side
and a dancing dragon on the reverse. The interior, in green-toned
Mother-of-Pearl Lustre, features a central medallion of the coiled snake
enclosing a small monkey. The base has a factory stamp; the pattern number is
worn with age.
Both mugs have three loop handles with a central gilt line and gilt
rims. These are rare surviving examples of Makeig-Jones lustreware, notable for
their preservation and unusual pairing of color schemes. It’s worth noting the unique
shape of these handmade miniature cups, and one might assume their production
was limited. Most likely, they were primarily intended for children, and
acquiring such a marvelous little cup would have been a delightful gift.
