Meiji Satsuma Figure: Hotei With Karako (tomoe Drum), C.1890
Artist: Satsuma
Japanese Satsuma earthenware figure group of
Hotei and karako, late Meiji period, circa 1890. The monk’s teal robe lies over
a finely crackled glaze; he holds an ōgi in the right hand and the strap of his
treasure sack in the left. The child plays a den-den daiko bearing a tomoe
emblem. The white “sack” base carries auspicious coral, coins and a lantern.
This composition impresses with professional, expensive-quality workmanship;
every detail is rendered with fantastic precision and realism.
Collectors’ note: a high-grade Kyoto-Satsuma piece distinguished by refined
modelling and enamel work — a desirable display object for focused Satsuma
collections.
