"Early Meiji Kutani Porcelain Figure Of Kannon On Shishi, Japan, C.1870"
A finely modelled and substantial Kutani
porcelain figure depicting Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy (known as
Guanyin in Chinese Buddhism), seated on a cobalt-blue shishi. Created in Japan
around 1870, during the early Meiji period.
The face of Kannon reflects the style of Buddhist icons from temple
sculpture traditions in Kanazawa, where the oldest Kutani kilns were located.
She holds a ruyi scepter, a traditional symbol of wisdom and wish-fulfilment in
East Asian art. This feature adds a spiritual dimension - the figure is not
merely decorative, but also serves a protective and sacred function. The lion is glazed in deep
Kutani blue, with expressive facial modelling and scrollwork in the mane. The
unglazed base reveals hand-forming and a porous low-refined porcelain body,
consistent with early Kutani export production.
