An exceptional Japanese Satsuma tea jar from the Tokyo studio of Taizan, dating to around 1890 (Meiji era). Richly decorated in enamel and gold, the jar features a procession of rakan monks under bamboo, executed in brilliant polychrome and shimmering gilt with raised moriage relief. The lid shows the imperial mon; the inner cover is also present. Two short glaze hairlines and minor rim nicks; finial absent. No cracks, no repaint.
The base is signed with a Tokyo-style cartouche in red and gold reading Dai Nippon / Bijutsuhin / Satsuma fū meiki / Taizan Sensei seisaku — consistent with known works by Tokyo Taizan, as found in major museum and auction collections.
A collector’s piece of real elegance, combining spiritual subject matter with technical mastery.
Dimensions: Height 14.2 cm; Diameter 12.1 cm
