"Small Kyoto Satsuma Teapot With Court Scene, Meiji Period, C.1885 – With Stand"
A finely decorated small Japanese Satsuma teapot,
attributed to the Kyoto school, circa 1885. The piece features a detailed
multi-figure court scene on one side and a landscape composition on the
reverse, all executed in polychrome enamels and richly applied gold. The lid
and upper section are adorned with dense brocade-style gilt decoration
(kinran-de), typical of Kyoto-style wares from the late Meiji period. The cream
ground shows a tight crackle glaze consistent with high-quality Kyoto ceramics. The
style of the painting, especially the expressive faces and textile detailing,
suggests an association with the circle of Shōzan, a known Kyoto artist of the
time. The mark appears to have been intentionally obscured, which was common in
pieces intended for export.
Condition: the spout has been reattached; otherwise
the piece is in excellent antique condition with all original gilding and
enamels preserved. The original wooden stand is included.
Dimensions: height 8 cm; width from handle to spout 12
cm; diameter 8 cm.
