Green And Brown Enameled Porcelain Vase. China 18th Century. Reign Of Kangxi.
Artist: Jingdezhen
High-quality porcelain vase. Exceptional atypical decoration, green enameling with subtle shaded pours, brown enamelled frieze in relief. This is a very rare, if not unique, style, probably one of the trials that were abandoned, as no other examples of porcelain decorated in this way are known. Brown-glazed underside. The slightly raised frieze shows an exceptional crystallized brown glaze. The green glaze, shows darker casting nuances that demanded total technical skill and mastery. The pure clay is as fine-grained as marble. We believe this was a creation of the Kangxi period, an experimental period during which ceramists tested different techniques and new oxides. The vase was broken, but fortunately, miraculously, its owner knew its importance. It was put back together again with great skill, despite the difficulty of putting together this puzzle of many small pieces. This is an exceptional document, a page in the history of Jingdezhen. China, Qing dynasty, early 18th century, reign of Kangxi. Height 24 cm. 19th century European gilt bronze mounting.
