Swiss Silver Watch, Ottoman Coat Of Arms, Cyrillic «македонија». C. 1882–1912
A Swiss silver three-body pocket watch, 5 cm diameter, bearing authenticated hallmarks of 1882–1912 from the Neuchâtel and Jura export tradition. Gilt cylinder escapement, three ruby jewels. The enamel dial carries the Ottoman military coat of arms of the Tanzimat and Hamidian period and the Cyrillic inscription «МАКЕДОНИЈА» — identifying the owner as a Macedonian Orthodox officer in the Ottoman army. The outer case bears the Cyrillic monogram «НВ».
The inscription «МАКЕДОНИЈА» in Cyrillic on the dial places this piece in a category of its own: no comparable example has been recorded in any public auction database. The watch retains its original Macedonian hand-beaded pouch in yellow and blue geometric folk ornament — made as a functional replacement for the case latches and surviving with the watch as a single unbroken ensemble.
A unique object at the intersection of Ottoman military history, Swiss horology and Macedonian cultural heritage — of the highest interest to specialist collectors.
