Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre Octagonal “celestial Dragon” Bowl By Daisy Makeig-jones, C.1915
Artist: Wedgwood, Makeig-jones
A fine Wedgwood Fairyland Lustre octagonal bowl,
designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones around 1915. The exterior is finished in a deep
blue lustre with decorative gilded patterns in an Eastern style. The interior
presents a luminous mother-of-pearl lustre with gold and bluish accents,
featuring at its center a detailed “celestial dragon” motif surrounded by stylized
calligraphic symbols. Fairyland
Lustreware production was organized into eight distinct color schemes, four of
which reflected natural light conditions — day, night, sunset, and moonlight.
Makeig-Jones occasionally combined two schemes in a single work, producing
especially dramatic effects as seen here. Such
a combination of rare form, unusual color, and rich decorative detail ensures
exceptional collector interest. Over time, the works of Daisy Makeig-Jones have
shown a steady increase in value, making this piece a fine decorative object
and a sound investment.
