Meiji Miniature Satsuma Vase By Chosei, Kyoto, Family Scene C.1890

A superb miniature Meiji-period Satsuma vase signed by Chosei, Kyoto, c.1890. The vase presents a finely balanced composition of a traditional Japanese family — father, mother, and child — seated amidst trays, lacquerware, and teacups. The genre scene is framed by delicate architectural features and background foliage.

Executed in precise overglaze enamels with generous gold, the work displays all hallmarks of high-end Kyoto production. From the layered moriage on textiles to the tiny facial expressions, every element is handled with care.

Of special note is the application of raised gold dotting, a highly skilled decorative technique also employed by the famed Yabu Meizan. This method places the vase among the most refined Satsuma exports of the Meiji period.

The red signature cartouche reads “Chosei-zō” (長生造), painted over the glaze.

An ideal investment for collectors and designers alike. Chosei miniature vases of this calibre are scarce, especially with genre figural scenes.

Excellent, with no cracks, chips or restorations (UV tested). Gilding is intact with minor age-related wear.
