Royal Worcester Majolica Fern Rockwork Jardiniere, England, C.1866
Artist: Royal Worcester
A rare Royal Worcester majolica jardiniere, England, c.1866. This impressive example was produced during the height of the Victorian “Fern Craze” (“Pteridomania”), when ferns and naturalistic motifs became highly fashionable in British art, ceramics, and home décor. The piece is modelled as a rocky outcrop with finely detailed ferns and mosses, with naturalistic pockets on each side designed to hold cut flowers or fern fronds for floral display. Comparable examples are preserved in major museum collections, including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Worcester Porcelain Museum.
Marked to the base with the early Royal Worcester printed mark (crown and circle), corresponding to production before the introduction of the year code. Few such pieces have survived outside museum collections, making this jardiniere especially desirable for collectors. Condition: Excellent antique condition. The interior has been later overpainted (some flaking of paint is visible in the photographs). Due to the highly sculptural form, it is difficult to detect any possible surface defects, but no visible chips, cracks, or repairs can be seen apart from the internal overpainting.
