Antique Rozenburg Den Haag Pair Art Nouveau Vases, Birds & Flowers, Signed, C.1900
Artist: Rozenburg Den Haag
A rare pair of antique Rozenburg Den Haag Art Nouveau vases, each of identical flared cylindrical form on a square base, finely hand-painted in polychrome with stylised birds among blossoming flowers and foliage. Both are finished with Rozenburg’s signature transparent “eggshell” glaze. Rozenburg achieved international recognition at the Paris Exposition of 1900, where their revolutionary eggshell earthenware was praised for its technical and artistic innovation. The vases on offer are marked to the base with the Rozenburg Den Haag factory stamp (crown and stork), along with consecutive numbers (276, 298) denoting their sequence in a limited series, and decorators’ marks. Most likely the vases designed by company artist Willem Hartgring, renowned for his bird motifs. Vases of this quality are represented in leading museum collections, including the Rijksmuseum and Kunstmuseum Den Haag, and are highly sought after by collectors for their rarity and craftsmanship. Provenance: The John Noakes Collection of Rozenburg Pottery.
Dimensions: Height 22.5 (weight 733 grams, the inside of the vase is darker) and 23 cm (weight 638 grams), rim diameter of both vases is 13 cm.
Condition: Both vases have chips to the upper and lower rims (see photographs), as well as age-related crazing and minor wear. No restoration. Despite these flaws, they remain superb examples of early 20th-century Dutch Art Nouveau.
