A well-modelled pair of Derby musicians from the Patch Period, c.1765. The bagpiper with a hound and the mandolin player with a lamb appear in the theatrical masquerade style noted by Bradshaw (“Derby Porcelain Figures 1750–1848”, p.85). They correspond to the E13 model described on pp.96–97.
Constructed with the heavier Derby bocage of the mid-1760s, the figures include a vent hole to prevent explosion during firing. Their design follows models created by Saxonian sculptors Johann Joachim Kändler and Peter Reinicke.
Preserved gilding is remarkable; the hound retains three original spikes. Each base shows firing lines and the raised supports for former candle nozzles.
